at night when we put the kids to sleep we make room among the piles of dolls, stuffed animals, and pink babies. they snuggle in, holding their lovies close, relaxing and drifting off in the company of these imaginary, embodied friends. sometimes it's even hard on the monitor to distinguish their heads from the heads of their company. we were familiar with this growing pile of fetish objects that begins to overwhelm the bed until Hazel came along and changed the pattern. because what Hazel snuggles up with at night has edges and sharp corners.
in her right hand she holds her bunny lovey that guards her during the quiet hours. but in her left, each night since she could make her opinion known, is a book.
it's not always the same book each night; in fact, it's different more often than not. but into that mysterious place of dreams, her choice is to bring word, picture, and world; into the unknown, the realm of story.
Felix likes to sleep with a book too. They are destined for each other!
